The Sown Storytelling Framework

Visual identity development, illustration, and poster design for Sown Collective: a no-cost, full-service documentary film production studio for non-profits.

I designed and illustrated a large format 18x24 letterpressed poster to present the Sown Storytelling Framework: a proprietary seven-stage story structure that has helped Sown raise an average of $200,000 per film in direct funding for each featured non-profit.

The Sown Storytelling Framework is based heavily on Joseph Campbell’s Hero’s Journey, streamlined and adapted for documentary filmmaking.

My task was to develop a visual aesthetic centered on seven core illustrations that would honor the weight and wisdom of the universal story arc, while being versatile enough to be used in the multitude of applications the Sown founders had planned: lectures, speaking engagements, and a Sony Camera Academy Masterclass.

The Sown Storytelling Framework featuring six hand-drawn symbols labeled: The Loop, The Leap with a bird, External Battles with two dragons, Internal Battles with an eye and two faces, Death and Rebirth with a skull and plant, The New Vessel with a chalice and star, and The Radiance as a diamond shape.Framed artwork titled 'SOWN Storytelling Framework' with three circular sections containing symbolic illustrations and handwritten notes, displayed above a brown leather couch.Close-up of a black and white hand-drawn map or diagram showing labeled sections with artistic symbols including a skull with a plant and an eye within a surreal face.Embossed logo of a person with long hair kneeling and tending to a plant, with text reading 'Non-Profit Films for Positive Social Change' in a circular layout.

The story framework design builds directly on the visual identity foundation I had previously developed for Sown: a versatile brand mark with an animated variant that kicks off the opening credits of each Sown film.

The opening credits version of the Sown logo overlaid on a macro photograph of fresh dirt with a strong lens flare. The logo reads: Filmed, Produced, Edited, for Free.
